Historical Apparel

Presentation of Mariano Fortuny through his life and creations in the Fashion Industry

In the Middle Ages, soldiers commonly wore armor of chainmail. Chainmail is made from small metal plates being sewn onto a leather or heavy cloth. The most common form of chainmail is the "four-in-one" pattern in which each link has four others linked through it. The name mail comes from the Latin word "macula" meaning "mesh of a net." The Met Gala in 2018 had lots of looks dedicated to the ancient times. Zendaya's custom Versace gown was the perfect example of the "Chainmail" style. The Versace gown features an armored neck and shoulder piece, chainmail, a spiked belt and a modest train. Zendaya's gown was a way to show equality of power and justice to all people. Versace's gowns are always created to portray a certain look the customer wishes to have. In this case the armor shown in her dress still gives the feel of history but with a fashionable twist.

In the 17th Century Virago sleeves became a staple for women's clothing. A Virago sleeve is a full, paned  sleeve, used in the early seventeenth century in western Europe. It was made from a series of cloth strips, which were gathered into two puffs by a ribbon or cloth band just above the elbow. The main sleeve strips were often embroidered. Sleeves like this were created to allow the arm to move more freely but still have class compared to tighter sleeves in previous eras.

Favorite Time Period: 1960's

The Sixties was a period of fashion freedom, everyone could add their own twist to any outfit they wore that day. It was full of surprises for example textures, colors, patterns etc. There wasn’t just one look from this time period this was a chance to experiment with looks which wasn’t seen very much during other periods before this. One Icon from this time was Twiggy, whenever I think of the 1960's one of the first people to come to mind is Twiggy. She was known for her skinny frame, thick eyelashes and boyish style. Many loved her look since it was so different and unique. There was many sides to the Sixties for example the classy style which was worn by Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy.  Another style was the experimenter which would be someone like Cher who liked to have her own unique style of outlandish patterns and wide sleeves and pants. It was a time to be free and be yourself, which was the change we really needed to express ourselves even in periods like today
